War and Peace
War is generally reviled, while peace is cherished. Despite peace being the ultimate aim of all our endeavors in the world, war has been an inevitable part of human civilization. Is there an inherent desire for war in humans? Or is it a learned behavior from society? We only recognize that there has never been a period in history where the world was truly at peace. Humans strive for peace and prosperity through the creation of families, communities, and nations. Why then, should these be allowed to be destroyed by war?
To minimize the likelihood of war, I propose two measures. Firstly, education should be strengthened to address the cruelty and barbarism within human nature. Knowledge, which is the product of education, is a reliable path to wisdom. Wisdom enables us to discern right from wrong and teaches us self-restraint and tolerance, which are effective in preventing wanton killing and destruction. Another solution is religion. Most religions worldwide advocate philanthropy and forgiveness, which melt away hatred and revenge. Therefore, with education and religion working hand in hand, a barbarian can be transformed into a civilized individual. With the guidance of wisdom and love, the human race will, as a whole, abhor war and embrace peace.2024-08-03
